Our Principles and Values
XR York welcomes anyone who supports our principles and values. We hope our blog demonstrates the ways in which these values play a role in our experiences of being a part of the XR community.
For the original principles and values of XR, visit the official international Extinction Rebellion site. As we are a branch of the same movement, we haven’t digressed from these values – we’ve just tweaked the explanations to show what each means for York specifically.
1 We have a shared vision of change
Creating a world that is revived for the current generation’s future, and sustained for generations to come.
2 We focus our mission on what is necessary
We strive to change the system through the power of people working together, understanding it is crucial to ensure that York council live up to its declaration of the climate emergency.
3 We need a regenerative culture
Creating a culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable. This is grounded in a community of compassion and creativity.
4 We openly challenge ourselves and our toxic system
Leaving our comfort zone, and/or the discomfort of doubting that we can make a difference, to take action for change.
5 We value reflecting and learning
Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences. [Read about XR York’s actions here]
6 We welcome everyone, and every part of everyone
Working actively to create safer, more equal, and more accessible spaces. The Love and Rage Blog aims to show this in a community of shared perspectives and creativity, as a reflection of XR’s wider culture of inclusivity.
7 We actively challenge power
Confronting the flaws of a system that is biased towards a minority, whilst aiming for more equitable participation.
8 We avoid blaming and shaming
We live in a toxic system, which we accept that we are also a part of, but no one individual is to blame for this.
9 We are a non-violent network
Using nonviolent civil disobedience strategy is the most effective way to bring about change.
10 We are based on autonomy and decentralisation
We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion.
Our Demands
- 01 Tell the truth
Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change. - 02 Act Now
Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. - 03 Beyond Politics
Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
